Frequently Asked Questions
Background I studied languages to 'A'level then trained as a teacher. For many years I worked in London in adult education and as an independent trainer. I taught regularly on the post-graduate medical teaching programme at St Bartholomew's Hospital. I have lived in France since 2006 and my teaching business is registered with URSSAF in Carcassonne (Siret No. 510 780 844 00013 - APE 8559B).

I never liked learning at school - will private tuition be different? Private tuition is nothing like school! All lessons take place in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. I will do my best to put you at ease and make your learning experience enjoyable and fun.

What are the benefits of private tuition? Private tuition is the fastest and most effective way to learn a language as it can be tailored to your exact needs. I always give homework so that you can carry on working between classes to make the most of each formal lesson and to help you get as much out of your investment as possible.

Can I learn with a friend? Yes. Taking classes with a friend or a spouse can be a great way to learn so long as you are of a similar standard. It is more cost effective to learn in a couple and you'll be able to interact in lessons and practice with each other between classes. It is worth noting that spouses often find it easier to study separately. Conversation groups for 3-5 people are also available allowing you to practice what you've learnt in your individual lessons with other students of a similar standard.

Where are the classes held? I live and work in the village of Arzens, just under 10 minutes from Carcassonne airport. Detailed directions are given when scheduling a first meeting.

How far do I have to travel to classes? You don’t have to travel at all. I give classes in students’ own homes and all that’s required is an uninterrupted hour with no distractions so that you’re able to make the most of the lesson.

If I'm unable to make a lesson one week, will I have to pay for it? You only book and pay for the lessons that suit you each month. Courses are flexible to take account of holidays. Lessons cancelled with at least a week's notice, will be rescheduled for another convenient date and time where possible. In the case of illness I ask that you give me 48 hours notice to cancel the session otherwise it will be charged at the full lesson rate.

How do I know what level I am? When you enquire, I'll send you a New Student Pack including an assessment questionnaire to complete prior to your first lesson. I'm always happy to meet with anyone considering working with me, for an informal discussion. There is, of course, no charge for this preliminary session.

Do you provide materials such as books? I will provide basic handouts and photocopies. I recommend that students purchase a good dictionary and verb conjugation book. I have a recommended list of books and will be happy to give you guidance on the best option for you.

I am happy to discuss anything above if further clarification is needed.
